Georges Braque (born May 13, 1882, in Argenteuil; died August 31, 1963, in Paris)—French painter, printmaker, and sculptor; together with Pablo Picasso, he was a founder of Cubism.
He trained as a house painter, but at the same time attended evening classes at the École des Beaux-Arts and later at other art schools in Paris. At the Académie Humbert, where he studied from 1902 to 1904, he met Francis Picabia. Initially, his work was influenced by Impressionism, then by Fauvism and the art of Cézanne; in collaboration with Picasso, he developed the theory of Cubism and incorporated it into his painting. He eliminated space and decomposed the object, depicting it on the surface of the canvas from all sides simultaneously, thereby approaching abstraction.
One of the characteristic motifs in Braque’s paintings was birds in flight.
