Biography
From 1949 to 1955, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Artur Nacht-Samborski and Józef Pakulski. Even before receiving his diploma, he became a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP) in recognition of his series of non-figurative works. These were large-format canvases created using paints mixed with cement or sand, forming almost three-dimensional structures. His painting style also influenced his lithographs, to which the artist devoted himself primarily from 1958 onward.In 1963, he moved permanently to the United States, where he has been a full professor of painting in the College Park School of Art at the University of Maryland since 1972. He is also a member of the university’s senate. His works are held in the collections of leading museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum in Warsaw, the National Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and Tianjin, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the National Library of France, the National Gallery in Ottawa, and the San Francisco Museum of Art. His primary focus is on multicolor, rainbow-printed lithography, known as “Split Color” or “Rainbow.”
