oil on canvas, 54x46 cm, signed lower left: Antoni Kamieński 1893
On the reverse side of the canvas is the artist’s signature in pencil and the stamp of the Parisian art supply store A. Bouche, Rue de Rennes
The work depicts a Parisian courtyard at 14 Avenue du Marine, where such well-known Polish artists as S. Wyspiański, J. Mahoffer, A. Szybalski, and K. Laszczka lived and worked side by side. After Wyspiański’s sudden departure from Paris, Laszczka moved into his studio.
Starting in 1891, Kamieński and Laszczka attended the Académie Julian together, studying in the sculpture class taught by Antoni Mercie.
The artists maintained close ties with the Polish literary and artistic community active in the French capital (Zenon Przesmycki, Władysław Ślewiński). An artistic record of these meetings is a drawing made by Antoni Kamieński in 1893.
