For a number of years he served as president of the Katowice branch of ZPAP. He participated in many district, national and international exhibitions. He also had several individual exhibitions, including in Katowice(in 1955-1973), in Sopot, Radom and Kielce in 1969, in Koszalin 1970 and Lublin 1971. On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the artist's creative work, in November 1981, an exhibition was held at the BWA in Katowice, entitled. "Jan Dutkiewicz and Students." The main theme of his paintings were landscapes reflecting the atmosphere of mining Silesia. In the 1960s, trips to Bulgaria and Albania resulted in a series of landscapes and genre scenes there. Sensitive to color, the artist expanded his color palette in these paintings. He achieved depth, spatiality and mood, referring to his youthful fascination with Post-Impressionism.
