Expressionist Ida Kerkovius is one of the leading representatives of classical modernism associated with the school of Adolf Hölzel and the Bauhaus in Weimar.
Studying at the Stuttgart Bauhaus, she meets Johannes Itten and Paul Klee and learns to paint based on Bauhaus conventions. Her first major exhibition received extremely positive comments from critics. After the Nazi takeover, she was considered a "degenerate artist" and banned from exhibiting. During the war, her studio in Stuttgart was completely destroyed by bombing, so that much of her work was lost. Toward the end of her life, her work was highly recognized: she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit First Class, received the title of professor and became an honorary member of the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts. The artist's paintings are in museum and private collections around the world.
