The present painting shows a composition typical of Monticelli in a brisk brushstroke, namely on a densely grained wooden panel. The park-like setting in particular, with its central gallant scene, in which he was inspired by Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), can be considered a characteristic of the well-known Pre-Impressionist.

Annotation:
In 1855 Monticelli met Narcisso Virgilio Díaz de la Peña (1807-1876) and painted with him in the forest of Fontainebleau. Between 1878 and 1884, Monticelli, who was born in Marseille although his parents were probably of Italian origin, painted together with Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). Monticelli also significantly influenced Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) in his work. (1420026) (13))
