This timeless, minimalist and extremely elegant photograph of French model Nelly Nyad is a quintessential example of Milton H. Greene's genius. It was taken in 1952 in New York when Nelly Nyad was already a recognizable face of Givenchy. However, the world remembered her mainly for this iconic photo, in which the artist used sparing means, focusing the light only on her lips, to bring out the extraordinary drama. The photo has also become one of the most recognizable in the artist's entire dossier.
Milton H. Greene was an American photographer best known for his elegant portraits of Hollywood stars. He worked with such icons as Audrey Hepburn, Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor, but his greatest fame came from his friendship and photo shoots with Marilyn Monroe. He created more than 50 sessions with her in the 1950s, capturing both her sensual side and her natural, intimate moments. His work was published in magazines such as Life, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Greene also co-founded Monroe's production company, which influenced her film career.
