EXTREMELY RARE type “orta” with the name of the city of Bydgoszcz in the legend on the reverse: “CIVITAT BIDG-OSTIENS.”
Issued for ONE month— with the numbers 2-1 and the letters C-G (the initials of Krzysztof Guttman, the administrator of the Bydgoszcz mint) on either side of the medallion.
The 21-grosz orts were minted pursuant to a royal decree dated January 14, 1651 (raising the value of the ort from 18 to 21 groszy).
However, the decree was revoked just one month later, on February 24, 1651!
Due to the short duration of its minting, the 21-grosz issue is one of the rarest of John II Casimir’s orts (24 marks in gold at Tyszkiewicz’s!).
A variant of the legend with the rarity: (...) DG - POL (...).
Mint luster, charming patina, minor surface imperfections.
For the finest collections—A RARITY!
