Sigismund III Vasa, Szeląg 1590 IF, Olkusz – very rare
Monogram Type II (Marzęta)
A variant featuring the Lewart coat of arms in the rim and the initials I–F (of Jan Firlej, Grand Treasurer of the Crown) on either side of the royal monogram on the obverse.
A crown above the coats of arms in the center of the coin (it does not divide the outer inscription); only a cross divides the outer inscription on the reverse—very rare.
A variant featuring the half-grate mint mark (of Mikołaj Hewel de Colpino—administrator of the Olkusz Mint), facing left, placed before the date in the edge lettering on the reverse.
Variant with the inscription … R – POL M D LI in the border on the obverse and … REG – POLO … in the border on the reverse.
Condition: 3+
Slight chipping of the coin’s edge, but a very nicely preserved piece for this type. A very rare variant featuring a crown above the heraldic shields in the field and a cross dividing the edge inscription on the reverse. A very rare coin and difficult to find on the collectors’ market. An attractive piece for specialized collections.
