GENOA Biennial Doges (1528-1797) Double half 1722 initials F M S - MIR 262/21 AU (g 3.31) RRR Border colpetto and modest deposits. This specimen is very interesting. First it will be noted that the second 2 is most likely rebated on 1 while no 1721 specimen is known in the literature. But even more interesting is to note that this specimen has an oblique ridged border. This border is not a post-minting work because the weight is absolutely regular and therefore not sheared. Given the orientation at h 12 and the absolutely flat surfaces, it is very likely that this coin was struck with a press and not a hammer as would appear by noting the somewhat irregular and uncentered roundel. It is therefore a coin that needs further study and, with it, the whole historical period of the mint in the early eighteenth century
