On the obverse, an eagle, beneath which appears the face value of 10 euros. Below, the mintmark. Around the edge, 12 stars and the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND 2003.
On the reverse is a bust of Justus von Liebig, with grain ears on the left and a building on the right. At the bottom are the symbols of the chemical elements. Justus von Liebig was a German chemist, considered one of the fathers of modern organic and agricultural chemistry. Even as a teenager, he conducted risky chemical experiments. One of them even caused a roof fire, forcing him to abandon his pharmacist training. At just 21, he became a professor of chemistry at the University of Gießen , where he created one of the world's first modern research laboratories. His discoveries laid the foundation for the use of artificial fertilizers and earned him the title "father of the fertilizer industry." Liebig also developed a method for producing a meat extract, which became the precursor to bouillon cubes, and contributed to the development of baby food and baking powder.
The medal was designed by the German Victor Huster, considered one of the most distinguished contemporary medalists and coin designers in Europe. He was already creating his own medals at the age of seventeen, and subsequently trained in goldsmithing, engraving, jewelry design, and minting techniques. In 1977, he founded his own studio, which eventually brought him international recognition. Israel holds a special place in his oeuvre, where he worked as an independent artist in the 1980s. He designed, among other things, the famous 1 new shekel coin. A distinctive feature of his work is the exceptionally high relief, which gives the coins and medals the appearance of small sculptures. Huster is the author of numerous commemorative coins issued by Germany and Israel, and his works are held in the collections of renowned museums, including the British Museum in London and the Numismatic Cabinet in Berlin.
