Biography
Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow from 1918 to 21 under J. Mehoffer and W. Weiss. He continued his painting studies in Berlin and Vienna. In 1924 he left with the Capists for Paris, where he stayed until 1939. From 1947 to 49 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sopot, and from 1949 to 1968 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In the early period of his work he was influenced by Expressionism, and was not indifferent to the Formist movement. He tried to combine in his works the hardness of geometric forms with the softness of the human body or plant shapes. In the mid-1920s, color began to play an important role in his paintings, treated with unusual sensitivity and always harmoniously aligned with a clear compositional arrangement. In his search for the right measure for contradictions, the measure for the element of life and art, the artist combined the spontaneous "projection" of sensation onto the canvas with the logic of construction, the highest sensitivity of the eye with deep culture, sensual beauty with beautiful thought. Nacht was reluctant to exhibit his works; he never had a solo exhibition. It was not until 1977 that a large posthumous exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw presented several hundred paintings selected from more than a thousand objects of the artist's counting studio legacy, shown for the first time in a full and comprehensive manner.
