"The chiaroscuro composition of the painting is built from two parts, which is a characteristic feature of almost all paintings by Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski. The foreground of the painting - the main motif of Work in the Forest - is shrouded in slight shading, while in the background the sun brings out the juicy green of the clearing, shimmers on the clothes of the men, enlivens the wall of the forest, closing the space of the composition. The artist with this treatment seems to balance the "weight" of the content of his paintings. He placed the main characters of the composition in the close up, characterized them in detail, showed them in the shadows as if he wanted to authenticate the details of the horse's anatomy, the facial expressions of the figures, their clothes, while the depth of the scene - the clearing, the trees, the landscape - he 'overexposed' bringing out the beauty of the outdoors."
