Excerpt from a short story by Jan KLECZYŃSKI—JULEK. A CONTEMPORARY PORTRAIT:“And in the prison cell. The last few weeks of imprisonment were the hardest for Julka Bielski. His conditions were bearable. He could read and write to his heart’s content. He knew he would be free, but precisely because he knew when that would happen, he suffered all the more as the date of his release drew nearer. He considered his own imprisonment a trifle—what did those three months amount to compared to the many years endured by other convicts? What did his act—a mere demonstration—amount to compared to the heroic deeds of his comrades, whom he regarded with a kind of superstitious adoration? What did he—a pawn in the organization—amount to compared to those men of steel who knew, as they printed *Robotnik*, spoke at secret meetings, and taught the youth and workers, that every day, every hour, they could fall into the hands of the gendarmes, endure torment, rot in dungeons, be hauled along in convoys through filth, excrement, and stinking stagnant air, in the cold and hunger, in chains, among people in whose souls nothing human remained, among criminals, thieves, and vile vagrants—all so that finally, after terrible, years-long, senseless investigations, they might end up in the tundras of the Arctic Ocean, or perhaps perish on the gallows. Who, then, was Julek Bielski, a first-year medical student...".
