The “Precious Stones” series (French: Les Gemmes or Les Pierres Précieuses) is one of the most recognizable and highly regarded series of lithographs created by Alfons Mucha, an outstanding artist of the Art Nouveau era. Created in 1900, it perfectly captures Mucha’s distinctive style, which combines decorative elements, symbolism, and the beauty of the female form.
Each print depicts a graceful female figure surrounded by lush, stylized plant motifs and ornaments typical of the Art Nouveau style. The women are dressed in flowing robes, and their poses and facial expressions perfectly reflect the symbolism of the respective gemstone and the season with which they were often associated:
Ruby: Red, symbolizing passion, love, and energy. Often associated with summer.
Amethyst: Purple, symbolizing calm, intuition, and spirituality. Associated with winter.
Emerald: Green, symbolizing hope, rebirth, and nature. Associated with spring.
