The offered study, painted by Janina Flamm in the first year of the artist's stay in Paris, belongs to the academic phase in her work. It betrays a perfectly mastered technique, the result of a thorough education in portrait painting received before she went to the Académie Julian. Entering the modern milieu of this Parisian school, which not only was the first in the 1880s to allow women to paint nudes from a model but also brought together artists from many European countries and the Americas, gave young Janine Flamm new opportunities for expression. Her paintings from her time as a student at the Académie Julian combine academic training with a modernist sensibility. It is characterized by an excellent mastery of traditional techniques, especially in depicting the body, while exploring emotional depth through intimate, often introspective subjects. The color palette leans toward warm, expressive tones, and the emphasis is on the mood, character and psychological aspect of the models portrayed. Her brushstrokes range from precise to loosely textured, showing a shift from academic realism to a more painterly, expressive approach. Comparative analyses allow us to see in the offered study the significant influence that the paintings of Amélie Beaury-Saurel, a French artist and also a teacher at the Académie Julian, had on Janina Flamm's work.
