Edvard Munch—born in 1863 in Loten, Norway. Painter and printmaker. His father served as a military doctor; his mother died when he was still a child. His sister also died during his childhood, which had a profound impact on the development of his personality, both as a person and as an artist. He studied drawing in what is now Oslo, and a scholarship he received allowed him to travel to Paris. Upon his return, he exhibited his works in the Norwegian capital. They caught the attention of the painter Adelsteen Normann, who invited Munch to join him; there, at an exhibition in Berlin, Munch’s paintings caused a scandal. He spent a significant part of his life in Germany, France, and Italy, but eventually settled in Norway due to illness. He was a pioneer of printmaking, often incorporating elements of color printmaking. He died in 1944 in Aker, now part of Oslo.
