Vladyslav Riaboshtan (b 1996) is a painter, photographer and designer. He was raised in Dnipro, the centre of one of Ukraine’s major industrial regions, and his work is often capturing these surroundings. Smoking factory chimneys, oil-black railway tracks, semaphores flashing with red eyes, a tangle of electric wires in the sky – some see such views as the dismal costs of civilisation, but Riaboshtan sees in them a special beauty. He combines the his admiration for expressive industrial landscapes with anxiety about the near future, working in a style ranging from impressionist painting to laconic graphic art. He is a graduate of the Dnipro Theatre and Art College (2016) and later at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (2021). He currently lives and works in Kiev and captures the realities of the capital, for example, in a series of works devoted to the mysterious underground world of the underground.
I was born and raised in an industrial city that hasn't moved away from the soviet system type of thinking. Since childhood, I have been surrounded by post-soviet landscapes, factories, a railway, an unfinished metro. Even after moving to another city, I wanted to find similar locations in it, to find what has become familiar to me. Kyiv, although is a more modern city, still preserves a lot of the soviet legacy. There are many abandoned industrial facilities in it, with which I worked in my painting series. One of the latest projects is a large series of Kyiv Metro. The series is still in progress. Most of the city's population descends underground to take the subway and get to the desired place. People become a large group, group in a large unite. The more the city grows, the more new stations appear, new ones are built all the time. The city remembers how it all began, but continues to develop

„The metro is the roots, the blood vessels that connect the organs of the city. It is enough to look at the map of the stations in order to understand it. For me metro - is a very strong nostalgia for my childhood. I remember this feeling, that there is a certain adult world, a big world of technology. Coming home, I tried to recreate this world in my room, from toys, I loved the children's railway very much. These toys were an attempt to make a cue on the reality of adults, on the objects of the adult world. I can't continue my metro series now. Impossible to visit my workshop in Kyiv, where are all my works left. There is always a big risk that the building will be destroyed. I'm still in Ukraine. For now trying to draw another series of works dedicating to win of the Ukrainian army. I draw with pencil and on A4 shits of paper. When you don't know where you will be tomorrow, small paper and graphite become a very attractive technique. And most importantly, the work is easy to carry around. You can draw, and in case of alarm, get together very quickly and go to the shelter.”

Vladyslav Riaboshtan (ur. 1996) jest malarzem, fotografem i projektantem. Wychował się w Dnieprze, centrum jednego z głównych przemysłowych regionów Ukrainy, a jego prace często utrwalają te okolice. Dymiące kominy fabryczne, czarne jak olej tory kolejowe, migające czerwonymi oczami semafory, plątanina przewodów elektrycznych na niebie – niektórzy postrzegają takie widoki jako ponure koszty cywilizacji, ale Riaboshtan dostrzega w nich szczególne piękno, łącząc zachwyt dla wyrazistych industrialnych krajobrazów z niepokojem o niedaleką przyszłość, pracuje w stylu od malarstwa impresjonistycznego po lakoniczną grafikę. Jest absolwentem Dnipro Theatre and Art College (2016), a następnie Narodowej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych i Architektury (2021). Obecnie mieszka i pracuje w Kijowie i oddaje realia stolicy, na przykład w serii prac poświęconych tajemniczemu światu podziemia.
„Urodziłem się i wychowałem w przemysłowym mieście, które nie odeszło od sowieckiego sposobu myślenia.Od dzieciństwa otaczały mnie postsowieckie pejzaże, fabryki, kolej, niedokończone metro. Nawet po przeprowadzce do innego miasta chciałem znaleźć w nim podobne lokalizacje, aby odnaleźć coś, co wydawałoby mi się znajome. Kijów, chociaż jest bardziej nowoczesnym miastem, nadal zachowuje wiele sowieckiego dziedzictwa. Znajduje się w nim wiele opuszczonych obiektów przemysłowych, z którymi pracowałem w swoich cyklach malarskich. Jednym z najnowszych projektów jest duża seria Metra Kijowskiego. Seria wciąż trwa. Większość mieszkańców miasta schodzi pod ziemię, aby wsiąść do metra i dostać się w wybrane miejsce. Ludzie stają się dużą grupą, grupą w dużej jedności. Im bardziej miasto się rozwija, tym więcej pojawia się nowych stacji, cały czas budowane są kolejne. Miasto pamięta, jak to wszystko się zaczęło, ale nadal się rozwija”.
