Maurycy Gomulicki—graphic artist, photographer, creator of installations and short films.
He studied at the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1987–1992), where he received a degree in printmaking under Prof. Rafał Strent and in painting under Prof. Jerzy Tchórzewski. He continued his education at the Universitat de Barcelona (1992–1993), the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan (1994), and the Centro Multimedia del Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico City (1997–1998). His work includes, among other things, photography, objects, installations, videos, and animations. He also works in graphic design and book illustration. He has published his writings in “Machina” and “Fluid,” among other publications. He lives and works in Warsaw and Mexico City.
Maurycy Gomulicki’s work focuses on the visual manifestations of pop culture in the broadest sense. He is particularly interested in those elements that take on new meanings when transferred to other cultural contexts.
He has presented his work at numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad. Consultant and co-author of the project “ABCDF—A Visual Dictionary of Mexico City” (2000–2002). He was largely responsible for the concept and image of the “Erotika” sex shop chain (Mexico City, 2005). He gained recognition among the general public thanks to his subversive, multidisciplinary project “Pink Not Dead!” (2006). Author of three photo albums: “Fúnebre” (in collaboration with Jeronimo Hagerman, Editorial Diamantina, 2006), “W-wa” (Bęc Zmiana Foundation, 2007), and “Minimal Fetish” (LeTo, 2010). In many of his projects, he engages in a dialogue with eroticism and pornography—notable examples include the enormous mural “Fertility Pop” (2008), exhibited at the Zachęta in Warsaw, and a series of collages collectively titled “Pussy Mandala” (2009). His most recent large-scale projects include: “Eco Fever,” Museo Experimental El Eco, Mexico City (2008); “Pink Bridge,” San Diego Children’s Museum (2008); “Perła,” DTP Wigry (2009); “Color Cube,” Renoma, Wrocław (2010); and “Obelisk,” BWA Arsenał, Poznań (2010). Since October 2009, his “Światłotrysk” has been bathing Kępa Potocka in Warsaw in neon pink. He is affiliated with the LeTo Gallery. He lives and works alternately in Poland and Mexico.
