Knowledge of kokeshi craftsmanship was historically passed down from master to apprentice, often as a family craft. Although it was necessary to respect the distinctive style and features of the original design, students added their own embellishments over time, resulting in a distinctive regional as well as artistic expression.
Bunsaku Tachibana was a well-known collector and designer of kokeshi dolls. The present woodcut is from the limited edition "Bunsaku Kokeshi-e" series, which included 14 doll designs. Highlighting Tachibana's superb craftsmanship and his understanding of Dentō motifs, these woodcuts are an ideal addition for the kokeshi doll collector or a wonderful stand-alone decoration for art lovers.
