Portrait of the portraited woman captured full-length, standing against a suspended curtain. Photo pasted on original cardboard backing. On the back an advertising vignette printed: "Photographie Busse & Dorbritz Danzig.". Good condition.
Friedrich Gustaw Busse (13 XI 1828 Berlin - 14 XI 1874 Danzig-Wrzeszcz), visual artist, photographer. In 1858 he made lithographic portraits of professors of the City Gymnasium on its three hundredth anniversary, including pastors: Carl Heinrich Bresler and Friedrich Karmann, Danzig mayor Leopold von Winter, Danzig police president Friedrich Wilhelm Clausewitz. Since May 4, 1859 he permanently resided in Danzig. Initially (in 1859) he lived at Fischmarkt 36 (Fish Market), after 1860 in Eduard Flottwell's former factory at Hundegasse 5 (Ogarna Street), with an annex at Hintergasse 94 (46 Za Murami Street) and an annex on the south side of this street No. 94 (1 Za Murami Street). Together with Flottwell's former employee, August Dorbritz (1833-1890), he ran the Busse & Dorbritz photography business. In 1861, during the visit to Danzig of the heir to the throne Friedrich Hohenzollern (Emperor Frederick III in 1888), August Dorbritz took his picture, for which they both received (as one of the first in Prussia) the title of court photographer. After leaving Danzig for Cologne in December 1862, August Dorbritz ran the business independently, under the name Gustav Fr. Busse. Although his father-in-law purchased the properties for him, from November 5, 1871 he lived in his house on Heiligenbrunnerweg (Do Studzienka Street) and moved his photographic studio there, specializing in artistic photography, including of actors and actresses, and documentation of historical monuments. In 1863 he took a photograph of Hans Memling's The Last Judgment in the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and later was the author of the photographs of the church's treasury included in Johann August Hinz's work, Die Schatzkammer der Marien Kirche zu Danzig(The treasury of St. Mary's Church in Danzig; part 1-2, Danzig 1870), as well as other surviving photographs with city buildings and scenes from the lives of its inhabitants. In 1872 he sold the establishment at Hundegasse 5 (Ogarna Street) to Richard Gottheil.
