Agate box, Grand Tour souvenir, France or Germany, 19th century
Moss agate, gold, brass: 10.5 x 5.5 x 5.5 cm
The box dates from the mid-19th century. Its form is typical of French art of that period; similar boxes were prized souvenirs brought back from the so-called Grand Tour—journeys undertaken across Europe by young people from aristocratic and/or wealthy families, intended to complement their education.
Condition: Very good (a slightly chipped corner on one agate inlay on the back of the box; the back beads have likely been replaced. The opening mechanism is functional).
