A similar painting was donated in 1950 by Louise de Saint-Maurice to the Polish Library in Paris.
Polish Prometheus (French: Le Prométhée polonais or Allégorie de la Pologne vaincue) - oil painting painted in 1831 at the Atelier of French painter Horace Vernet, influenced by the defeat of the November Uprising against the Russian Empire.
The painting depicts a dead Polish soldier lying on the ground with a saber handle in his right hand, on whose torso sits a warrior black eagle, a symbol of Russia. The composition and subject of the painting, which is an allegory of the fall of Poland, refer to the ancient Greek myth of Prometheus.
