Biography
He lived in St. Petersburg from 1905. After the revolution, he stayed in Kyiv, where he was a student of Aleksandra Exter. In 1921, he traveled via Constantinople to Paris. In the 1920s, he was influenced by the paintings of Vincent van Gogh and James Ensor; in the following decade, he became fascinated by the work of Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. In the 1920s, the renowned art dealer Wilhelm Uhde became his patron. His friends included Serge Ferat, Leopold Survage, and Ossip Zadkine. In the 1920s, he created genre scenes with a rich color palette. In the following decades, he began to practice abstract painting.
