"Abitare" (2015) - from Italian "to dwell" - is a series of works in which the author tried to capture and present all the factors that make up an apartment. Dwelling, that is, building a space around oneself with objects of different appearance, shape, color and function. It is settling in, creating a relationship with one's surroundings, seizing space and things for oneself. Tomasz Ciecierski translated these factors into the language closest to him - the language of painting, and based on photographs from an Italian magazine about interior design and architecture - the title "Abitare" - he created his own compositions. A series of collages with the same title (2014), focuses on the potential hidden in everyday objects and elements of the immediate environment. Ciecierski created the compositions by juxtaposing cut-up abstract visuals, views, furniture, architecture or drapery. Carefully selected photographs and the fragments cut from them gave the effect of light building systems based on color, shape, object and its dynamics and internal network of mutual relations. Despite the abstract form, the artist's inner discipline speaks through the works.

Tomasz Ciecierski (Krakow 1945, Warsaw 2024) studied in 1965-1971 at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, receiving his diploma in the studio of Professor Krystyna Łada-Studnicka. From 1972 to 1986 he was a teacher at his alma mater. In 1981 and 1983 he stayed at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam as an "artist in residence." In 1985-1986 he stayed at the Atelierhaus in Worpswede, Germany, and in 1991 he was a fellow at the Musée d' Art Moderne in Nîmes, France. He made his debut among the talented artists of the so-called New Figuration of the 1970s, distinguishing himself from the start with his individual style and treatment of form. He usually divided his early paintings into fields, placing figures and abstract patterns, signs, ornaments, etc. seemingly unrelated to each other (hence the title of one of his series - "Allogic Paintings", 1975-1976). He populated his paintings of the late 1970s and 1980s with "throngs" of small, busy silhouettes, diverging in various directions. Sometimes they were mixed with signs, such as letters or ideograms of waves, spirals, which raised the impression of dynamic composition. He also painted characteristic polyptychs, in which the large central part is surrounded by a "frame" of small pictures (Déjà vu series, 1986-1987). The works of the 1990s are mostly spatial compositions or peculiar reliefs built from a number of small pictures, attached to each other on a collage basis. Often the subject of works of this type is a simplified seascape. Various periods of the artist's work are invariably accompanied by drawing, treated as an equal means of expression with painting. In particular, the period of compositions with the described "crowds" resulted in many series of drawings in soft pencil, crayons, pastels. The artist collaborated with the Foksal Gallery and prestigious foreign galleries: Vetering in Amsterdam and Hans Strelow in Düsseldorf. He has repeatedly participated in group exhibitions of international rank, such as the Festival in Cagnes-sur-Mer (1982, 1984), the 5th Biennale of Sydney (1984), the Biennale of Sao Paulo (1987), "Polish Realities", Glasgow 1988, "Positionen Polen", Berlin 1991, "documenta" in Kassel (1992).
