29,8 x 42,0cm - oil, fiberboard signed on the reverse: P. Potworowski | Landscape from Lagow
The painting was most likely created around 1958. In that year Piotr Potworowski returned to Poland after eighteen years living outside the country. He spent the summer with friends and fellow Capists (including Jan Cybis) in Lagow. He became enamored with the Polish landscape. It was then that he created Landscape from Lagow (now in the collection of the National Museum in Poznan). Landscape from Lagow, presented here, is a sensitive study of the landscape, maintained in characteristic green tones. In his work, Potworowski sought to limit the range of colors, bringing out the richness of tones with a narrowed color scale. Potworowski's paintings, created by him, are based on a narrow, discreet palette, thinly applied layers of color and testify to the artist's extraordinary painterly sensitivity.
