Biography
She studied art at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź under the guidance of W. Strzemiński and S. Wegner. She received her diploma in 1950. As early as 1948, she participated in the First Exhibition of Modern Art in Kraków. Shortly thereafter, she left for Israel on a scholarship, after which she settled permanently in New York. She exhibited her work in Łódź, Wrocław, Kraków, Paris, Tel Aviv, Haifa, and New York, among other places. In 1956, she received first prize at an exhibition at the Gallery Saks in Paris. Her paintings, which straddle the line between figuration and abstraction, are rich in color and reveal the artist’s truly expressionistic explorations. These canvases reveal a profound and subtle sensitivity to the everyday world around her. Sobel’s work is highly regarded by art critics and historians. Judyta Sobel’s paintings are found in numerous private and museum collections around the world.
