CKZK 5, 104. Complete multi-sheet so-called "Quartermaster Map of the Kingdom of Poland" issued between 1822 and 1843. Most sheets form. ca. 44x70, some 44x61.5, four sheets form. 22x70 cm. Work on the map was started in 1822 by the General Quartermaster Office of the Polish Army, from 1833 it was continued by the Russian Division of the Corps of Topographers for Surveying the Kingdom of Poland. The copperplate work was done entirely by the Karol F. Minter workshop in Warsaw. After the fall of the uprising, the work on the map was taken over by the Russian military authorities, also employing Polish cartographers. "Despite the complicity of Russian topographers in the second stage of work, the map, made entirely according to the instructions developed by Poles, is actually a Polish work and as such is one of the most outstanding achievements of Polish military cartography. Technically, too, it ranks among the best copperplates of modern times. Until 1857 it was not distributed. As late as 1863, Polish insurgent troops had trouble acquiring it" (CKZK). The full set of sheets presented here includes a title page with the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Poland (Tsarist eagle with White Eagle on the chest), coats of arms of the eight governorates of the Kingdom, dedication to Nicholas I and the date 1839, sheet index, 59 sheets (including 4 half sheets). Scale of maps 1:126,000. On some sheets blind embossments of the Military-Topographical Branch of the General Staff (in Cyrillic). Maps marked in the upper margin with two Roman numerals (column and section (row). Tucked-in tears and losses of the margin of the index sheet, small loss of the upper margin of one sheet, some sheets dusty.
