Biography
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Professor Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz beginning in 1964 and graduated in 1970. He primarily creates sculptures of human figures made from newspaper. Between 1969 and 1974, he created three series of approximately 50 figures each: walking male nudes and standing female nudes with their arms crossed above their heads. In 1972, he exhibited his newspaper-paper figures at the 36th Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Biennial, as well as in Philadelphia, Paris, Mannheim, and in galleries in New York, Antwerp, Ghent, and Brussels. Thanks to a DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) fellowship, Karol Broniatowski moved to Berlin in 1976 and participated in numerous monument design competitions. In 1991, he created the “Monument to the Deported Jews of Berlin at the Berlin-Grunewald Station,” a 20-meter-long concrete block featuring recessed human silhouettes. In 1996, commissioned by LGT Bank in Liechtenstein, he created “The Foot from Bendern”—a 5.15-meter-tall bronze sculpture depicting a fragment of the foot of an invisible giant. He also works in printmaking and drawing.
