Richly decorated snuff box made of Tagua walnut. The central decoration consisting of silhouettes of two women in folk costumes is surrounded by a richly carved floral ornament.
Tagua walnut originated in South America. When dried, it takes on characteristics similar to those of ivory, for which reason it is sometimes called "vegetable ivory". It used to be used by sailors, who made trinkets out of it during long voyages. It is possible that this type of pedigree is what this snuffbox had.
