The Janowa Dolina settlement was established during the Second Polish Republic in 1920-1930 as a model company settlement at the newly established State Basalt Quarries, employing about 1,200 workers. The settlement grew with the development of the mine, reaching a population of more than 3,000 in the late 1930s, 97% of whom were Poles. On the night of April 22-23, 1943, Ukrainian nationalists burned Janowa Dolina in Volhynia and murdered some 600 of its residents, including many women and children.
