Sage trying to catch a catfish
Length 9.5 cm, width 3.7 cm
Signed "Hozan
A wise man with a gourd attached holds onto an oversized catfish in this very finely executed carving.
This depiction is based on a well-known Zen riddle by the fourth Ashikaga Shōgun Yoshimochi ( 足利 義持 , March 12, 1386 - February 3, 1428), "How to Catch a Catfish with a Gourd?", which also inspired the famous painting by Josetsu in 1415.
The Kōan says that trying to understand Zen with logic and reason is as impossible as catching a catfish with an object as unsuitable for it as a gourd.
