First edition (fourth thousand) of Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel of manners, in which the author departed from historical themes to show the life of a man at the end of the 19th century devoid of fixed principles and purpose in life. The work is psychological in nature - the romance plot here serves primarily to present the experiences and reflections of the protagonist, Leon Płoszowski. Sienkiewicz wanted to show a skeptical, sophisticated and morally uncertain man. The book provoked discussions and accusations of amorality.
