Dictionary of Polish and foreign artists active in Poland (who died before 1966). Painters, sculptors, graphic artists. It has been published since 1971. It is the only publication of its kind not only in Poland, but also in Europe. It differs from other biographical lexicons in the wide range of artists' names included (meeting the criteria in the title and subtitle), as well as in the detail of the biographies and exhaustive bibliography. It presents the activities of all Polish painters, sculptors, draughtsmen and graphic artists (including more prominent amateurs) creating at home and abroad, as well as representatives of other nationalities active on Polish soil. It includes artists who are famous to this day, but also those who are less well known, sometimes unjustly forgotten or of tertiary importance, or whose existence is confirmed by just one work or a single archival, press or diary reference. Thus, in addition to biographies of several pages, there are much more modest, even just a few lines. Many of the personal entries of painters, sculptors and graphic artists published in the Dictionary... are the first monographic presentations of their work in the Polish art literature. In compiling the entries, exhaustive use is made of all publications and, to a limited extent, manuscript sources, as well as the resources of the archives of art academies, professional creative unions and other institutions, and oral information of people associated with the artists.
