, "If War Tomorrow" is one of the first Polish novels dealing with the communist takeover of Poland. Orwid-Bulicz strives to present a full panorama of Polish society and its reactions to the political breakthrough taking place in the country, and as the book's promotional leaflets stipulated, "The reader will encounter in it a faithful description of the scenes the author looked at with his own eyes. The silhouettes of Soviet soldiers and officers, their robberies, rapes and crimes are not the writer's imagination, but - facts." And then he added: "And yet this novel does not have the character of a reportage, because Orwid-Bulicz [sic! - note SCh] deliberately excluded himself, and in his place introduced another man - the protagonist of the novel. To him he made him live, watch and suffer."
