Memoirs of a communications officer of the 1st Brigade of the Polish Legions, based on diaries kept during frontline service and on materials of the Telephone Branch of the 1st Brigade. In them, the author, engineer Stanislaw Zmigrodzki, describes the beginnings of the rifle movement, the activities of paramilitary organizations in Galicia, and then the first months of the war - from mobilization in August 1914, through the Kielce expedition, to operations on the Nida River and on the Eastern Front in 1915.
The text, devoid of emphases and rhetoric, is documentary in nature. It contains numerous technical details about the Legions' communications service, the construction of telephone lines, the organization of patrols and the 1st Brigade's technical facilities.
