Each of the "Patterns" repeats the motif of the figure, a motif on which the "grammar of ornament" in Kulik's works is based. A grammar developed in "Gesture Archive" (1987-1991), a collection of some 700 black-and-white photographs with a nude male model reproducing poses and gestures from different eras and iconographic traditions. In "Patterns" the figure already takes on a purely ornamental quality. Multiplied in rhythmically repeating patterns, it almost disappears in its unitary shape. [...] In "Patterns 6," inspired by the cover of the Quran, the rows of figures with a sheet of paper are part of the elaborate style of Arabic ornamentation.

Zofia Kulik studied in 1965-1971 at the Department of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under the guidance of Prof. Oskar Hansen and Prof. Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz, from whom she received her diploma. In 1970-1988, together with Przemyslaw Kwiek, she formed the KwieKulik artistic duo. The works of these years - objects, installations, actions, performances and others, as well as activities such as running a gallery in a private apartment (PDDiU), publishing a photographic newspaper ("rozsyłki") - they signed together. Since 1987, Zofia Kulik has been working and exhibiting individually. In the technique of "repeatedly exposed black-and-white photography", which she developed, she creates photographic series characterized on the one hand by ornamental decorativeness, on the other - by the use of military motifs and attributes of power. At first she made works of small formats, over time reaching monumental "carpets", complex in composition and content, such as "All shells are one shell" (1993). The artist exhibits a lot, participating in prestigious shows at home and abroad, including "Europe, Europe", Bonn 1994, Kwangju Biennale (Korea) 1995, XLVII Art Biennale, Venice 1997, "L'autre moitié de l'Europe", Paris 2000. She is one of the leading Polish artists of the "critical art" trend.
