Tadeusz Cieślewski (Son) [1895-1944].
Bernardine Fathers' Church in Warsaw
Woodcut on paper
Dimensions: image 16 × 11 cm; frame 26 × 18 cm
An outstanding example of the work of Tadeusz Cieślewski (Son), an artist associated with the Warsaw graphic arts community of the interwar period, known for his woodcuts on architectural and religious subjects.
The depiction shows the church of the Bernardine Fathers in Warsaw, maintained in the artist's characteristic style - with a strongly contrasting composition and expressive chiaroscuro, emphasizing the monumentality of the temple. The work testifies to Cieślewski's fascination with the form of Warsaw's sacred architecture and its historical significance.
In the margin of the composition there is an inscription:
"Church of the Bernardine Fathers in Warsaw with the image of M. Boska Czestochowska by T. Cieślewski, funded by Lutnie in 1901. Printed from a woodcut block by T. Cieślewski's son."
A comparable piece of this work is in the collection of the Museum of Warsaw, inv. no. MHW 15055.

He mainly created architectural compositions, with Warsaw, especially the Old Town, being the dominant motif of his work. He died during the Warsaw Uprising, and much of his creative output was burned in a studio fire.
