Marek Zulawski was born in Rome on April 13, 1908, the son of writer Jerzy Zulawski and Kazimiera née Hanicka. He spent his childhood in Zakopane and later in Torun - there, in his mother's literary salon "Zofijowka", he took his first drawing lessons under the tutelage of Tymon Niesiolowski. In 1926-1933 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the studios of Karol Tiche, Felicjan Kowarski and Leon Pękalski, then co-founded the graphic design workshop "Atelier 33" In 1935 he received a scholarship that took him to Paris, and from 1937 he settled permanently in London - there he exhibited, among other things, at the Leger Gallery, and during World War II he worked for the Polish section of the BBC, later continuing his career as an art critic. He was also an active essayist and critic - he published, among other works, "From Hogarth to Bacon" (1973) and an autobiography, "A Study for a Self-Portrait" (1980) He died on March 30, 1985 in London; he left behind a rich body of paintings and prints, as well as archives at the Emigration Archives of the University of Toruń.
