Biography
Illustrator and graphic artist; she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1955, having studied in Henryk Tomaszewski’s studio. From 1949 to 1969, she served as a graphic editor at the “Nasza Księgarnia” Publishing Institute. She has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Bronze Plaque at the International Biennial of Book Illustration in Bratislava (1967) and the Bronze Goats at the 1st Biennial of Art for Children in Poznań (1973). Characteristic features of her work include: bold, strong colors in unexpected combinations (though she also used a subdued, subtle palette of pastel shades in other works), a penchant for strongly defined contours, a delicate simplification of shapes, and a nostalgic, sometimes dreamlike mood. Among Krystyna Witkowska’s best-known works are the illustrations for Helena Bechlerowa’s *Mr. Florian’s Clover*, Wanda Chotomska’s *The Adventures of a Hedgehog from the Outskirts of Zgierz*, Tadeusz Kubiak’s *The Rainbow Umbrella*, Joanna Kulmowa’s *Bedtime Stories*, Janusz Korczak’s *When I’m Little Again*, and Bolesław Zagała’s *Why Does the Kitten Hang Around the Kitchen?*.
