Wlastimil Hofman and Jerzy Karszniewicz were close friends, both studied in the studio of Jacek Malczewski and Jan Stanislawski at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow. The artists went to Paris together in 1899 for further studies, which they continued with Jean-Léon Gérôme.
