This portfolio is not only a documentation of Schiele's work, but also an example of the editorial artistry of postwar Vienna. Valuable to both collectors of prints and lovers of Central European Expressionism.
An exclusive portfolio prepared and published in 1951, edited by Otto Benesch, one of the most prominent experts on Egon Schiele's work. The publication contains 24 reproductions of selected drawings by the artist - both portraits and nudes - demonstrating his outstanding mastery of line and body expression.
The selected panels capture not only Schiele's graphic technique, but also his characteristic emotional charge, sensuality and introspectiveness. The portfolio is both a collector's publication and a source for researchers and enthusiasts of Viennese Expressionism.
Egon Schiele (1890 Tulln an der Donau - 1918 Vienna) was one of the most prominent Austrian Expressionist artists. A pupil of Gustav Klimt and a member of the Viennese Art Nouveau circle, he became famous as a draughtsman and painter of portraits, nudes and self-portraits characterized by psychological depth and formal boldness.
His work, characterized by strongly deformed anatomy and intense expression of emotion, was long controversial, but over time gained canonical status. Schiele died tragically young during the Spanish flu epidemic, leaving behind works that had an enormous impact on 20th century art.
