Venezian Master, 18th Century, Pryamus and Thisbe
The subject represented is Priam and Thisbe, two characters from Greek mythology whose events are celebrated by Ovid in the Metamorphoses (IV liber, vv 55-166). The painter’s style is characterized by a full-bodied and sanguine touch, with a popular flavor, by brushstrokes of robust impasto. On the back of the painting an old report by Biagio Milanese from 1940 attributes the work to Gaspard Dughet, an Italian painter originally from France, also known as Le Guaspre, or Gaspard Poussin, due to his relationship with Nicolas Poussin. Oil on canvas, 42 x 61 cm
