Biography
Stanisław Czajkowski studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, from which he graduated in 1902. At that time, as a young artist, he was admitted to the Polish Artists’ Society “Sztuka.” He continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where his brother Józef—also a painter—and Olga Boznańska, his great and unrequited love, lived. While in Paris, he attended the Académie Julian. He undertook many artistic journeys throughout Europe. He also visited various regions of Poland, as evidenced by his landscapes of Kazimierz Dolny on the Vistula, Wola Radziszowska, the Vilnius region, and Podhale. He was friends with the most prominent figures in the art world, both in Kraków and Paris. He attended the famous wedding of Lucjan Rydel, described by Stanisław Wyspiański in his play *Wesele* (*The Wedding*). Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński identified him with the character of Nos. The artist was a student of Jan Stanisławski, who instilled in him a passion for the landscapes of his homeland. To some extent, Czajkowski became a continuator of his master’s ideological legacy. He employed intense colors and sweeping brushstrokes. He created atmospheric landscapes in which he captured picturesque corners of Poland and beyond. At the turn of 1980 and 1981, a posthumous exhibition of the artist’s works was held at the Zachęta in Warsaw.
