Johann Georg Schütz (1755–1813), Night Landscape with Bonfire and Moonlight. Johann Georg Schütz first learned from his father, the landscape painter Christian Georg Schütz, then studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf and lived in Rome for a few years before settling in his hometown of Frankfurt. People have gathered around a campfire at the entrance to a large cave, a path leads around a rock in the center of the picture to a river or lake in which the full moon is reflected. The view extends into the distance through a valley bathed in silver moonlight. The contrast of the warm light of the fire with the cool light of the moon gives the picture a special charm.
