"From his spring plein-airs in Saint-Tropez in 1921 and 1922, he brings back landscapes and still lifes with flower and fish motifs, sophisticated in compositional and color solutions, echoing the Spanish Fauvist experiment. In them he firmly organizes his relationship with the paintings of Cézanne and Renoir. The plane of the paintings thickens. Trees gain a slight fluffiness, with their fanciful arrangements they deepen the perspective or close it, the horizon line mostly rises towards the upper edge, leaving a narrow strip of sky. Its blue, sometimes slightly pearly, and the azure of the water pierce from behind the curtain of trees. Sometimes these closed arrangements replace the panoramic shots."
