Agglomization - a rare painting technique, which involves painting the reverse side of the glass with varnish. There are several variations of this method. It is possible to engrave an ornament with a needle on a foil laid on the reverse side of the glass, and sometimes fill in the engravings with colored varnish or paint. Eglomization was also called filling in with gold or silver foil the free areas on a picture painted on glass. The term eglomizing comes from the name of Jean Baptiste Glomy, a French framer from the second half of the 18th century, who used this technique to decorate glass frames in framed prints.
The technique itself and its variations were known in antiquity. In the Roman Empire in the 2nd-4th centuries, glass vessels so-called fondi d'oro (Italian for gold backgrounds) were popular. Eglomization was also used in the Middle Ages, and became popular in the late 16th and early 17th centuries in Italy and France.
