The Apotheosis of Homer is one of the largest lithographs made by Atelier Mourlot.
Mourlot specifically commissioned limestone stones of sufficient size for Dali's idea to make this lithograph. The composition reflects the painter's fascination with Greek and Roman mythology. Dali "reduces Homer to a piece of broken sculpture, a relic, while the solid temple of the muse itself dissolves..." "The ethereal horse," which may be Pegasus , which rejects riders trying to reach the stars, again signals the end of the myth. On the right is a sleeping naked woman, depicted as Gala , the artist's wife.
Salvador Dali's lithographs in editions of up to 300 copies were mainly created between 1957 and 1980 at Atelier Mourlot and were supervised and signed personally by Dali.
